IN THE SHORT TERM, at least, Marat did have a problem with Boris Nayfeld, who was fuming in his Berlin hotel room when he learned what had just happened in Brighton Beach.

I was so upset with Marat when I first heard that Gaspipe killed Vadik, I was furious. It was my job. But one of my guys says to me, “Well, what’s done is done. Good riddance to bad trash.”

It was true—Vadik getting killed meant I had one less thing to think about. In the end, it was a positive. Because when Gaspipe flipped, when he started cooperating and told the government everything, by then Marat was doing time in prison for credit card fraud, and the feds tried to pin Vadik’s murder on Marat. Marat also started talking to the FBI, and if I’d pulled the trigger, who fucking knows? The feds could have picked me up for it, too.

After a while I realized that the Italyakhas killing Vadik was a blessing in disguise. But when I first got the news in Berlin, I was so angry with Marat. I shouted: “I wanted to kill this motherfucker—this was my revenge!”
